Here it is - the 1st DK Spring Open - catch-and-release bass tournament for forum members only on Saturday 5/12/07 - Lake St. Cliar
Mark your calendars and plan to catch (and release) a bunch of bass on this world class fishery.
Launch: Harley Ensign Ramp, South River Rd/Clinton River
Type: Boaters/nonboaters drawn together and then work as a team - best 5 bass

Hours: 8am until 2pm (we'll launch early if everybody is there and ready to go)
Count me in as a non-boater.
Count me in as a non-boater.
Are we going to use the same Golden Rule catch and release measuring boards that the ABA uses? If so I have 2 that I can bring.
Willie
Im in for sure/boater
not sure if i'll be able to make it or not. Prom is the night prior. haha who knows how that will go over. i'll see what i can do. if i do go i'll be in as a nonboater
-Kid
Hey Kid just go to the ramp after prom and we will wake you up for registration :D
Im sure we will need all the non boaters we can get.

You might be able to ride over with me depending on schedules.
We'll see at things get closer.
Was Shaw on Grand Traverse Bay?
The Golden Rule would be the best tool to use for a spring catch-and-release event. Anyone with extras would probably help since not everyone may have them.
Bring your digital cameras to take a few pictures of fish during the day for the web site report later since there will be no weigh in at the ramp.
That time of year, we can go out of Harley Ensign or Selfridge. The cutoff ramp too probably, but I think since we'll have anglers going north and south - we'll split the difference and go out of Harley Ensign in the middle - the end of South River Rd at the Clinton River mouth.
More details after the Novi Show.
Didn't say if he was in the bay or not. He just kept saying lake michigan. They were in a bay, but it looked pretty small to be traverse bay. He was nailin 4-5# smallies on a spinnerbait and a little finess worm.
I'm in as a boater.
to early to make the call. headin' to tennessee that coming week for a wedding & possibly a trip on tim fords lake. i'm sure your list of who's/who's won't be due 'till.....?
I'm in nonboater
Talked to the girlfriend (she wasn't happy) and talked to my dad and i will be in for sure as a non boater. Doubt i will need a ride Dan but thanks.
-Kid
I will have to look to see how my schedule pans out for that date as we get closer. I will be coming as a boater.
BD ;D
Well, I hope you can make it. Bring warm and calm weather with you and we'll have a day to remember...!
Stack as a non boater??? But But shiny new boat??
???I'll give it a shot as a boater! Hopefully my non-boater will have clue how to fish St. Clair. (only been there once)
only been there once ??? when you figure that lake out you wont want to fish any place else!
Dan get a map and pm me if you want I will give you some "community"spots.
We usually go over a map at the ramp for spots and places to beware.
In - Boater
I think I can make it to the tourny - I need a reason to get to St Clair anyway!
Sorry - late post Dan ... Shaw was in the the East Bay ... took off from Elk Rapids ... I'm pretty sure I recognized exactly where he was fishing ... I'll have to consult the Genie for sure ... I have some waypoints along with the pictures ...
-Genie
Im in as a non boater at this time but that could change. and shaw was in the east bay
I've got to get back out there... been a few years and I still haven't been out there much. So many bass... so little time...
Where is the fall open going to be? Any thoughts yet? LSC is just to far for us to go at this time, but who knows maybe when it gets a little closer and I'm needing my smallie fix we will be able to work it out. I think next year you should have it on GT Bay!! Much closer for us westsiders!! :D
Get me more westsiders and anything is possible. I am planning on having the fall event somewhere towards the west side of the state. Not sure how this will affect participation though. You are more spread out and less numerous over there yet. I'll start a thread about it.
I'm in for the GT Bay or Muskegon Lake.
-Genie
Put me down as a non-boater, I won't have my motor set by then.
I'm in as a boater.
Any excuse to go to St. Clair in May. No, wait, I don't need an excuse.
MIBassKid, good to see you at Novi. Glad you decided to make St. Clair. You're going to love it.
Dan, don't start!
Good to see you too Vince, also nice to see Dan. I'm pretty excited about getting out there already. Maybe Vince can put me on some fish again...and catch some this time? haha Stopped by Wayne's booth a pick up a few tubes. Good lookin colors he's making. Has anyone tried his tube in the sand craw??
-Kid
Probably not yet - it's brank spankin' new! I will be giving it plenty of test drives in a little while...
Sup Dan, glad to see you at the show, I might be able to five or six boats to show up. I'll be needing to do some smallie fishing after fishing the Ranger Owners Tourn. at Kerr.
Kerr should be some good fun too - good luck if I forget to say so before you go.
If I don't have to work, I'll be there...I think. I'll have to check with my wife first. Sheesh, how things change in a few short years. :-\'
Is that a "Who's your daddy" that I hear in the background...??
I will be there as a Non-Boater.....Do Walleyes count that time of year???? Maybe we could do a combo tournament...5 walleyes and 5 Bass...Just kidding..Can't wait.
B
Count me in as a Non-Boater. Cant wait!!
Great! Should be fun!
Note to Dan:
Suggestions from someone who has run a few Paper tourney's
Make sure everyone is using the same Bump Board - Golden Rule has more then one board. Your anglers should be using the Golden Rule BB 51 - Which is the Bass Bump Board - If they use the walleye or another board their weights will be off.
I can lend you my weigh-in sheets I use that help explain some details.
The ABA is having a golden rule tourney the following weekend and I will make a deal with you Dan....
I will come to yours and help you if you come to mine and help me?
Do we have a deal?
Also if your real nice I will bring a box of BB51 Boards with me that guys can buy .... I can get them cheaper then they probably can.
And what makes you think I wasn't planning on bribing and/or tricking you into this already???
Let's talk...
Dan;
Jason and I will be there.
One boater and one non boater
planning on being there as a boater.
steve smith
I plan to be a boater and I plan to bring a non-boater with me.
Question .... is there and age limit?
I am planning to be there as a boater. Is this gonna be a team or draw thing?

1. Make sure they are a member of this forum. One rule to be fair.
2. No age limit as long as I have the parent there since that is who I think younger than 16 should only fish with. I need written or verbal consent for 16 - 17 years old.

I'll take everyone who has said they'll be there the week before and do a boater/nonboater draw matchup. I'll let everyone know who they are fishing with so contacts can be made. You'll fish as a team for your best 5.
Dan,
I'm planning on making this event this spring. Would like to go as a nonboater, but in a pinch I could haul the old Bass Cat over.
Ok - I'll start putting a list together soon to see where we are at right now and let you know.
Can I pick who gets to fish with my wife? I do not want a repeat of last year so it will not be me.
B
You're dumping your partner...??? and putting it in writing...??? Youch!
I'm open to any possible issues.
I changed her password, remember? She shouldnt have let me think it up for her. The only thing I have to worry about now is Joshimoto. If she leans on him too hard for the Tri-Tips fiasco I could be in trouble. You'll have to see him for further info on that. In fact... I dont want her spending 8 hours with him. Will have to exclude him from the draw.
B
Understand... plus... he's a chick magnet!?!
Sorry Dan, I can't make it. I have to head to Table Rock for the Owner's tournament. I'll try to make the fall event. Good Luck to all.
PK
i dont think i will be able to make it either. My wife is due on the 12th, so im guessing i will be grounded for the whole month of may.
McCarter himself :-\'
ahhhh young love brian how sweet, I remember all those days I stayed home from fishing just to make my beutifull bride happy :-* hahaha wait till she calls you a jerk and tells you your never around and she does everything :o then you will want every one of those days back :D
all in good fun buddy congrats and oh maybe since I will be fishing the stren in new york when mine is due you can come hold my wifes hand since your such a sweet guy ;D

If you have her induce now you can spend plenty of quality time with the youngster between now and then. She'll think you are the greatest dad in the world and reward you with a kitchen pass.
B
Dan, I am in as a boater if I have my boat back by then... The big yellow freighter is having some warranty work done on her but I am hoping she will be back by then. If not I will go as a non-boater for sure.
Ok - waiting until after the GR show to start putting things together to see where we're at.
I'm in as a nonboater. I am looking forward to another fun DK Open!
-Ryan
Great - I'll put a tentative list together Sunday as long as there are no surprises :D
Dan - count me in as a boater - can't wait!
Jack
This is Mich. waters only, correct.

making the call that i will miss the "hawg heaven fest". but on the bright side, will be trying my luck on tim's ford lake. will send my bass wishes to those that fishes....
I'm hoping this is Michigan waters. I don't think that Canada's season opens till later.
Also, I don't have a Canadian license. As a matter of fact, I don't have an o7 Michigan license either....
Dan,THIS IS BOB690 I'M IN AS A NON BOATER. THANKS BOB G.
Michigan waters only
dan im still in but don't know if I will be a boater or not boat still in shop
We'll work it out either way.
Right now that date is open for me. If it stays open I'll be there. It depends on the Pistons playoff schedule. I'll probably have to wait until the last minute.
Pistons? Is that basketball? :P
B
i know it is going to be 70 deg and flat calm that day... any thoughts of an alternate lake if it turns out windy?? maybe Kent of Cass
I would like to fish as a non boater.
Count me in as a boater. I need to meet everyone.
Count me as an idiot. I somehow scheduled to have class that day for one of the classes I am teaching. I guess I won't make it, although I have been looking forward to it all winter.
Dan,
I had posted as a boater, but I'm going to switch to non-boater. I hope to match up with someone who can show me around the Lake
Dan,
How much? Where can I get a golden rule? Give me the information and I'm in as a boater. By the way, I've never been on this lake so give me someone who knows the lake. I would hate to think I ruined a non-boaters day on the lake.
thomas
I am probably a little late for suggestions but let me know if you guys change it to a sunday.
I'm in. Non Boater.
Dan, count me in as a boater.
Barry n. :)
Do we need to have a Golden Rule stick for this Tournament? I know there was some talk about borrowing some..Anybody got a link to get the correct one?
Thanks,
Brian
Seeing how I am going as a nonboater anybody want to carpool as I have no idea where we are going out of.
I am planning on going over from the Grand Rapids area and may be going by myself if the wife doesn't want to go for the weekend.
Dan let me know if you want a rider you will be going right pastme. I'm in Howell.
Bill
Also your pm box is full
Bill,
I will be heading that way from Fowlerville. If it doesn't work out with Dan let me know.
The correct bump board is a Golden Rule Weigh Master GG-51 Large Mouth Bass Bump Board, according to a post by Anthony on the ABA forum.
Willie
Thanks Willy I will keep you in mind.
Bill
I'm out for this one. Boat wont be ready in time.
B
Here's a link to the bump board they are talking about. I will have one with me so whoever the boater is I link up with all set.

I too can bring mine with me, in case my boater or another boater doesnt have one.
I'm coming out of Laingsburg (Haslett/Perry/Owosso area) on the morning of, in case anyone needs a ride.
Hey Bill,
I can meet up with you and/or Willy at the park and ride there on D-19 and I-96 if you would like.
I can even drive for a change.
I really don't care who drives as long as they know where their going as I have no idea!!!!!!!
I have a board also. But I don't know if my boat will be done so at this point im a co angler if I do have it done in time I will go as what evers needed
Hi,
I would like to fish as a non boater.
marya, welcome to GLB. I see this is your first post. Hopefully the first of many!
She's shy, but she needs some new fishing friends to get out - helps if you like Bill Dance (her hero) :)
Hey Dan, what's the count look like, so far?
I will post a tentative list of boaters and nonboaters with an initial draw late tonight. Sounds like there might be 2 or 3 more coming in yet.
Count me in Dan! Just re-arranged my schedule and can now make it. let me know if I need to buy a board.
I been telling myself not to fish the DK open because of the drive distance for me, but its too tempting. This sounds like it will be a blast, I would get the chance too meet all of you guys and fish my favorite lake in michigan. So if there is still some spots open you can count me in as a non-boater. Is there anyone fishing the DK open from southwest MI that would want to carpool? Dan let me know if I can still get in.
Tim C
Hoping to drive over from Grand Rapids area if that is southwest enough.
Dan,
I am about as southwest as it gets, Benton Harbor so I don't know if that could work.
Tim
TCook, youll be glad that you made the trip when it's all over! We had a blast last year in the fall, and it looks like there is going to be a great turn out. Looking forward to seeing the pairings and gettin out there, I'll be the drowsy one just wakin up, Prom the previous night...gettin excited!
-Kid
Hey Tim,
Lived in St. Joe from third to ninth grade. Off Langley Ave. by the hospital. I'll see you on the east side.
Dan
I scanned the postings and didn't notice what the cost of the tourny was. Also, will it be US water only?
See here for the cost: http://www.greatlakesbass.com/forum/index.php?topic=2415.0
I think Dan mentioned earlier that it would be Michigan waters only, Although if its just a paper Tournament not sure why we couldnt do Canada too? Wait then I would have to buy a Canadian lisence, forget my previous comment, I think Michigan waters only is a good idea!
Also the canadien season isn't open yet and they don't have a CIR season.
From posts I have seen I guess they can be real tough on you if they even think you are targeting Bass. I think if we throw a fish on a Golden Rule they might get that idea.
I am kind of having the same problem. I want to start looking around in the SC river for spots for the July BFL, but I would be afraid to throw a lure anywhere near the east bank.
Good point, I wasnt even thinking about their seasons, I was only thinking about the VHS stuff.
$5.00 entry and $2.00 big Bass? That will be the lowest donation I've ever made!! ;D
Dan, count me in as a co-angler.
Dan- what's the boater/non-boater ratio now? It seems like it is non-boater heavy...
My intentions were to make it but I recently had motor problems and don't know if they will be resolved by then. One of my aerator pumps punked out too. When it rains it pours. The pump is on order but, I 've got to troubleshoot this outboard problem and get the boat to the water to confirm it's repaired by Saturday to make the DK Open. I've had the boat out a couple of times, and then it started running funky with no power. I can only idle. I'll keep working at it. ???
Ok, it only took me like 20 minutes to read all these posts and I just have a few questions.......How much is it to play? Who will be my partner? So count me in as a non boater. ALSO: can we have a "critter" pot. just to have something to bring to the scale? That way I can slap McCarter with my big nasty slimmy critter. Hey I have an idea............CAN I BE YOUR PARTNER DAN? *Raises hand and calls dibs on Dan* I want to find out all your secret hot spots and make Anthony pay for the info.
**Jaye
Anthony is way too good to need my spots... ;D
He is coming though since he's bringing the scales, bags and extra Golden Rules for a special price for boats that don't have one, right?
Yes Anthony is comming to the tourny, and so am I.
**Jaye
Hey TCook,
If you want to drive over we could meet in Kalamazoo. Let me know.
Does anyone have the address, if there is one? I'm coming from Lansing and need directions.
-Kid
Harley Ensign Memorial - Boating Access Site
Civil Division: Harrison Twp
County: Macomb
Coordinates: Lat:42.593262, Lon:-82.774731
Take the I-94 E ramp to Port Huron - go 7.3 mi
Take the Metropolitan Pky exit 236 - go 0.3 mi
Turn right at 16 Mile Rd/Metro Pky - go 2.6 mi
Turn left at Jefferson Ave - go 1.0 mi
Turn right at S River Rd - go 2.0 mi
This is a map route that I got off the MI DNR website. When you click on the link you will see a list of ramps. In the box with Harley Ensign you will see a tiny little box that says "map it." Click on that tiny box and it will take you to another page. In the right margin of that page you will see "Driving Directions." Clicking on this will take you to a page that you can enter your address in and get a door to ramp map.

Hope this helps.
Hey Kid,
I told TCook that I was available to meet him in Kzoo to drive over to the tournament, but I haven't heard from him. So, I will be coming from Grand Rapids through Lansing to head over Saturday. If you want to hook up and ride together let me know.
Dan, sorry about the slow response I must have missed the post last night. If they are non-boater heavy I don't want to cause any hassle due to my late addition. But if they need a non-boater and you still have room for me, im in. Anyways thanks for the offer, I think I will try to make the Fall tournament for sure.
T
dan I will have to come as a non boater . my boat is still in the shop. would have really liked to bring it but don't think I would get far. so if you can save a spot for me. I will be car pooling with castnblast .
Hey I'm going over and can go over on 94 or 96 so whatever works for you or MIBassKid someone can ride with me. Someone to talk to and split gas works for me.
Just let me know and we'll work out a place to meet.
put me in as a non boater. just got into tournement fishing would like to fish this and meet some other members.
Hey Dan,
Jerkbait is my brother-in-law, and I just got him into the ABA. He fished Kent and would like to fish the open with us, so that he has a chance to meet some more anglers. You met him at the NAIFS ;D

Thanks for recruiting him. Unless I have two jerkbait's (sounds funny) on the forum, I think I had him down as a boater previously. I'll update the list to show him as a nonboater.

Don't forget your board though. We'll probably need it for your boat or maybe for someone esle to borrow... just in case.
dan,
I was wondering when you want us non-boaters there on saturday?
7:30 if possible, maybe 7:40, but I'd like to have time to get your stuff in a boat and go park, then help launch and be ready to go by 8 AM.
My plugs may have gotten fouled from additives, (sea foam, stabil) and some not needed idling. I changed them yesterday and I'm going to try it this morning, (Friday). I only have one livewell pump working but that's enough. I'll let you know by the end of today what my status is. I hope that was my only problem. I appreciate you keeping me in mind and I apologize for any problems I may have caused.
