congrats to the winners. listening to the weather radio on the way up i figured the bay would be off limits. having never fished the river i just headed up stream to a back water. i caught 2 keepers all day. did catch 6 catfish and 1 pike. saw a bald eagle and 2 nice bucks. great to see them give a boat away for around a 40 boat turnout.

Congrats to Don Watts, heck of a year so far as usual.
Thanks for all the kind words. Luckily I watched the weather real close and rolled the dice and decided to practice the river for two days. During practice I did catch bigger largemouth than smallmouth but alot less of them. So I decided on tournament day to fish for the smallies. It was alot tougher on tourney day than in practice. It took about 4 hours to get my limit of smallies and I decided not to take the long no wake ride to the very few largemouth. It wound up being pretty tough the rest of the day with only one other keeper. I thought I might have screwed up by not going for a big largemouth but as it turned out it wasnt needed.
I do have to give thanks to grassmonkey for a heads up on the river. Thanks Brian
I also want to give a big GREAT JOB to NBAA for putting on another great championship with lots of cash and prizes for all the top contenders plus a boat for first place. Just and awesome job.
Theres a good chance of getting blown out anytime your are on the bay in August. For some reason August is the roughest month up there, but september it the calmest. That north east blow was what we needed though, a lot of bait was blown in from Huron. Any of my spots worth a darn put out a 3.5lb average on monday, best day of the year so far outside of the spring. Congrats to the winners, the Saginaw river can be very tough. The no wakes aren't fun either.
