Could any one tell me the exact saftey equipment (anchor, paddle, flair gun ect. ect.) that is required to fish canadian waters. I have heard different things from 2 different people just want to make sure.

Be careful with the flare gun - the handheld flares are ok for canada, but the 12 ga pistol type is condiered a handgun which is illegal in canada.

I don't have the list handy, but willl post when I have a chance to dig it out.

I don't think a flare gun is considered illegal in Canada.

"Q. I always carry a flare gun in my boat/vehicle for emergencies. Do I need a licence and does it have to be registered?

Flare guns and other devices designed exclusively for signalling or notifying of distress, and intended to be used exclusively for that purpose by the person in possession of it, are not classified as firearms for purposes of the Firearms Act. You do not need a licence to possess one, and it does not have to be registered. These devices are classified as firearms for purposes of the Criminal Code if they are used to commit a crime."

good to know they finally got something right - I'll put mine back in the boat when going to canada now.  In the past, the 12 Ga signalling flares was considered a pistol and subject to registration in Canada.

I was not aware of any change to this. In the past few times I've been checked, the Canucks asked about it and seemed to eagerly await my answer... made me nervous. I was told by one border agent when asked if I had one that I was not allowed to bring them into Canada. Been a few years, but there was also a comment that I could not have the flares that shoot out from the launcher either.

Again, been a while, but with the over aggressiveness with with which the Canucks have enforced this in the past, I don't feel like testing it personally. If I get another chance to ask the right person, I will.

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.
