I was one of those fishermen that believed the hype . I bought the umbrella rig and gave it an honest try . Fished it in lots of different situations , with lots of different baits . I can't say that after many hours of fishing , over the whole summer , that I ever had a bite .I have read in many Bass magazines how they catch them , but they all seem to be down south . Have others had the same results or is it just me ?

Waterfoul

I've caught a couple fish on it here in Michigan.  Edyer caught a couple smallies on it last weekend.  So, in the right situation and in the right place they will catch fish up here.
Addicted to fishing.  All the time, any species, anywhere!!  Especially in West Michigan!!!

Some anglers are catching bass on them. Pike too. Lots of anglers aren't giving them a good try really. The rig is a tool like any other and real good at the right time. LGMOUTH and friends caught a ton of bass on them in Northern Indiana this past spring. It seems to be really good in the spring and fall, but has worked for some anglers over the summer who have tweaked them and/or tried different variations in size and presentation.

I haven't had much of a chance to try them in Michigan yet but I sure did have fun with Amazon peacock bass on them!!!

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.

I have had the same results.

To be perfectly honest here, I bought 2 of them a year ago, and still haven't tried them lol.

You definitely won't catch any bass that way! Pike neither...

Works best when the water cools, and the bait bunchs up ::) Just now starting to work here in the Carolina but will improve greatly once the water cools another 5-10 degrees.

Would be interesting to know how many were bought at the fishing shows and never made it to the water.  I tossed it a bit this year but only caught a few fish.  Figured it work on Cass this fall but only had a couple follows.

Wonder what the new bait will be this year at the shows.   Maybe the 1/2 Senko will be the rage.

Skulley

I used the umbrella rig in the spring a bit.  But because I was catching fish more consistantly on other baits, put it down.  It did catch the silver bass pretty good when they were running.  Just didn't have a lot of luck catching smallies on it.  Caught a few more largemouths but I am not convinced that it was as hot up here in Michigan as it was down south.  But like any lure/bait, they all have their place depending on what, when, and where.

Havent  heard much about any wins besides elias

Nationally, there were a number of wins including several right around the time Paul Elias won the Big One! Dan Morehead won the 2011 Everstart Championship on Kentucky Lake with one. The co-angler also won that event on an Alabama Rig.

An Everstart at Guntersville in May 2012

October 2012 BFL Wildcard Regional Win again on Guntersville.

About 2/3's of Dudley's bass to win the FLW Tour in April on Beaver Lake.

October 2012 Pickwick Lake BFL Regional win.

These are just a few I recall. Shortly before Paul Elias blew things open with his October 2011 FLW Tour domination there was a regional or divisional win similarly dominating somewhere in the Eastern half of the US but I don't recall the lake or person for sure? That victory got more people on the 'got to try it' side for the FLW event.

There have been a number of significant Western US bass tournament victories on umbrella rig variations too (January 2012 Lake Shasta Everstart) that we don't hear as much about.

The technique has been a factor or the key presentation in quite a few tournaments. Heavy on the spring and fall but not completely limited to those seasons.
