Is anyone gearing up for the fall hunt? I'm not hunting this fall but, I am getting ready for next spring. I'm going to try to take a bird with my bow. I've seen it  done but never tried myself. I'm told that the  right decoys  and broad heads are key. I'm  going to practice all winter.

just remember when placing your decoy for bow hunting to place it so the bird is facing away from you when he fans and then he can't see you draw. Just aim for the bullseye.

Lot's of birds everywhere. Know matter who I talk too. This has been a great season for food crops and insects. The flocks have grown. Maybe from all the coyotes that were culled out this past season.. There is a nice flock of Smokey grays in Waterloo and  a fare amount of white birds  east of Kalkaska.. A friend in WestBranch tells me that a large flock has moved in and taken over her garden. The season is about  over anyway and not much left in the garden .This maybe a heavy snow winter, if this summer is any clue , more than average rain fall may lead into a lot of snow.  Make sure you feed this winter.

Important changes! Turkey management units J, T and WS  are open this year. Unit YY is for private-land hunting in southern lower Michigan. Good luck.

I have a friends in northern Oakland County. I may pickup a YY  for that area this year. That aera is  silly with lots of birds. His flock on his property has doubled.

 Most of my contacts across the state tell me that. There are more polets mixed in the flocks this year. Several different sizes. Hopefully our winter will be kind to the birds this year. The birds are still separated into groups of toms and femails with young. I was coming back from the woods and water show, in early  Sept. I witnest several groups of big toms along I-53, south of Imaly City.

 Being a solitary bird when nesting. Turkeys form a nursery when raising their Young. After they return to the flock from their nesting spots. The flock will act like one family, being reared by younger hens in the flock. The Alfi female will watch and lead the flock.

When hunting turkeys in a blind with a bow. wear black, you blend into the inside of the blinds better. This gives a better chance to draw back on your bow, with out being seen. Large or mechanical broad heads will work fine. You do not necessary have to take the head off, nor take a rump shot. I've learned that a 10 to 20ft, there is a spot just above wear the wing attaches to the shoulder. Make that  your mark. This shot will be over the birds breast, and not messup the breast meat. Shoot high watch them die shoot low watch them go!
