Bob Luellen pulls drowning man from freezing Mississippi River

Worldwide Marine Underwriters owner Bob Luellen was pre-fishing for a walleye tournament on the Mississippi River in Minnesota earlier this year. He was on the dock while pro walleye angler Mark Martin was nearby in his boat when a man jumped into the freezing cold Mississippi River.

Bob says the man first waved at Mark Martin to get his attention and then jumped or fell into the water. The water being as cold as it was (note the snow still on the dock and ground) the man quickly became unable to help himself. Since Bob was on the dock he was able to grab the man and try to pull him out of the freezing water.

If you've ever tried to pull a wet, fully-clothed adult from below you in the water before, you will know it is not easy for anyone alone. Bob says he was finally able to grab the man's belt and drag him onto the dock.

man Bob pulled from the freezing Mississippi River

Bob tried to help the man while Mark Martin made his way back to the dock and they waited for police and EMTs to show up. The man was already suffering from hypothermia and unable to help himself much.

Bob and Mark did what they could for the wet, freezing man until police and EMTs arrived to take him to the hospital.

Note: Bob is definitely one of us Midwestern Michiganders! Notice the snow on the ground and dock, and Bob is wearing sandals!! :D Ever pull a soaking wet, freezing man from the water while wearing sandals!?!

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.
