Derek and I met for some bass fishing on September 12th on Lake Ovid because we needed to fish close to home this time (and I just get along with Lake Ovid more often). It was a nice morning but we were a little surprised by the wind blowing steadier than we expected with quite a bit of cloud cover.

We started fishing around the big island and for awhile nothing happened though we tried topwater to pitching plastics and several things in between.

I switched to a white Kustom Kicker Jigs Jackpot swim spinner jig and was tossing it over the outside edge of the weeds on a weed point when this nice bass came completely out of the water and crashed down on my jig! Took a quick picture and let it go fast because Derek pointed out it was bleeding quite a bit. It had inhaled the jig and was hooked at the base of the gills - a sensitive spot.

It was a spectacular strike! Hopefully the bass survived to be caught again when it's even bigger later!

We fished our way down the lake into the creek channel heading towards the road. Derek decided to drive us down the lake so we could fish back with the wind. We stopped the boat and were drifting to a full stop when I said to Derek, "Is that a bass sitting right there?!?" Derek kept his foot off the trolling motor as we stopped drifting literally 3 feet from the bass off the side of the boat.

The bass was next to the boat but had it head pointed away from us looking into the thicker weeds. There was one thin weed clump between us and the bass. Derek said no way as I pitched a Bullet Craw a few feet past the bass and let it swing back into the same hole the bass was in.

Before the Bullet Craw or line touched the bass I let it drop and the bass spun around towards our boat less than 3 feet from the side of the boat and dove towards bottom! Derek put his foot on the trolling motor to move along as I yelled, "I GOT HER!" Derek said no way again but my rod doubled over and I went toe to toe with this almost 4 pound old largemouth bass that is one of my favorite bass of the year. Just for pure attitude!! :D

It was awesome as I grabbed the bass by the lip and pulled it into the boat as Derek shook his head saying over and over I can't believe it! I can't believe it! Very cool and made my whole day!! It was an old warrior of a bass with a beat up look to it but healthy looking over all - a really nice bass.

I wish I had a dollar for every time Derek said, "I can't believe that bass at your Bullet Craw!" ;D Throughout the day he said it over and over, while I just kept laughing and shaking my head for the sheer joy of catching a bass I never expected to catch. Everything had to go exactly right in a very short amount of time for this bass to be caught instead of spooked!

We never got anymore bites in the lower end of the lake so finally we moved back up past the big island to fish some weed edges and weed points.

I was hoping for big bites so I took to pitching a Kustom Kicker Dock Monkey - black and blue with a black and blue Case Plastics Cash Craw trailer. I was pitching it into weed holes, down the weed edge and even snapping it off of weeds, something I enjoy doing (snap-jigging) with lots of jigs.

I had the lure down at the base of the weeds and snatched it off a patch of weeds when this nice bass grabbed the jig and I did a fun 'Bassmaster' hookset into the fish!

I caught another small bass doing this and the bite slowed again while the wind kept building. We moved around closer to the dam and eventually ended up fishing the humps. I pitched a Bullet Craw into a thick weed patch on the edge and a big fish took off into the weeds on me. I set the hook hard and the fish was stripping line into the weeds when it just pulled off the hook!!! Shoot! I really, really wanted to see what this fish was and how big!!

We did some more pitching without getting any more bites.

We moved back to the windy side of the humps and were getting pushed with the wind pretty hard so I switched back to the 2K Jackpot from earlier and it got slammed on the weed edge by this bass.

Minutes later I got slammed again but didn't hook up but it was less than 10 minutes later when I got slammed on the Jackpot again! Just tossing it over the weed edge and bringing it into the wind. Derek was throwing a spinnerbait but I was running the boat at the time so I got first crack at the bass lining up on the windward edge of the weeds.

We ran out of time and that was the day. A few dinks were landed and we missed a few bites. Didn't see any muskies... but we know they are there. Another great day on Lake Ovid though. One of my favorite lakes!

In case anyone is wondering I did have a small pearl colored Angling AI mold swimbait body on as a trailer on my Kustom Kicker Jigs Jackpot swim spinner jig.

The Stevie Rig is Out of There.  Spinnerbaits are my life now.  Spent 7 hours throwing one on Wamplers today.   Got to get some of the spinnerbaits with the semi clear plastic bladed you had..

I don't believe it!

Spinnerbaits have their time though for sure and sometimes that Kustom Kicker Deposit Spin Titanium Revolution spinnerbait does catch them really good!
