Reporting requirements for private boaters

New Reporting Exemptions
The reporting requirements for private boaters have changed. You no longer need to report to the CBSA if you meet the reporting exemptions detailed below.

Reporting Exemptions
If you are visiting Canada, you are not required to report to the CBSA if you:

• do not land on Canadian soil and do not anchor, moor or make contact with another conveyance while in Canadian waters, and
• do not embark or disembark people or goods in Canada.

If you are returning to Canada, you are not required to report to the CBSA if you:

• did not land outside Canada and did not anchor, moor or make contact with another conveyance while outside of Canadian waters, and
• did not embark or disembark any people or goods while outside Canada.

YEP! I called CANPASS this morning like I have a half dozen times already this year when I'm headed to Canadian water and the nice lady asked if I was fishing and if I planned to touch ground in Canada and was then informed that the law was passed as long as you do not touch Canadian ground you no longer have to call CANPASS

This is great. I've always avoided canada just for that reason. Too many good spots here. Dumb question.  Do you need a canadian fishing license for catch and release? If so do you have any info. Price. Where to go. Im in trenton

You need an Ontario nonresident fishing license in your possession if you are in Ontario waters with a rod/reel in your hand or on your deck.

You can save money by buying the Conservation license which allows only 3 fish in your possession - still a little over $50 for a year last I checked. Plus, every 3 years you need to buy the Outdoors Card (to then purchase any hunting/fishing license) - cost just under $10 for 3 years. Buy the Outdoors Card, then your fishing license. You can buy them both online or by phone.

The local tackle shop there on 10 Mile and Jefferson used to be able to get you an Ontario fishing license if you ordered ahead. Don't know if they still do that, and not sure if they can get your the Outdoors Card if you don't already have it? There are short-term licenses too but buy them twice a year and you should have just bought the Conservation annual. You still have to have the Outdoors Card no matter what I believe. That's how they identify you uniquely in their new data system.
