I am considering some options....
Are extended warranties on Engines worth the money?? The 5 year deals have ran out..To extend the warranty from 3-5 years it is 1700 bucks...A minor breakdown on a Pro XS could easily cost that...but I will be lucky to get more than 50 hours a year on an engine....
What do you think???? I know it is always a roll of the dice and I have pretty much been against extended warranties but with these high dollar engines I am not so sure....I know it helps resale if you have some warranty left....

Good insurance if you can swing it and it covers the major things that go wrong considering how expensive many repairs are. Our season is pretty short so we all hate to lose time due to expensive breakdowns. I'm buying into coverage products when I can just because of our short season and the size of the Great Lakes.

Have you talked to the guys at www.reclending.com for comparison price quotes? They are in Michigan with a lot of industry experience. Ken, Todd and Chris - svc@reclending.com - 517-543-6921

Considering the cost of these contracts, it pays to shop them for quotes, and to talk to people who know about bass boats and performance engines to make sure you're coverage is worth the price.

My thought would be that if you intend to unload it within 5 years then the warranty is worth it for the resale value.  I know I am more likely to buy a used rig w/ engine warranty left.  Combined with the cost of minor and/or major repairs and it is probably money well spent.

Thanks for doing that! I hope it was helpful and I hope you mentioned seeing them on GreatLakesBass.com.

Brian,

I had all the injectors on my Etec replaced last summer.  Cost for the injectors was $3,600 alone.  It was covered under the original 3 year warranty.  This summer a new issue arose concerning three of those injectors.  They need to be fixed/replaced and it came under the extended warranty.  They made the marina jump through additional hoops and aren't going to cover quite all of the repair bill.  However the bill was $1,700.  With the high costs of these engines and the way they have them running so lean, I would purchase an extended warranty, but make sure you understand what it will and won't cover.

I would rather have a good insurance plan vs. an extended warranty.  I am usually not a big extended warranty guy.

For $850 per year I would risk not having it.

make sure its directly from the manufacturer. i had a buddy get one that was sold to him by D&R. when his motor took a dump he found out the company filed bankruptcy.

carefully read the fine print on your policy.  Mechanical failures are often not covered.  The insurance policy is not a warranty.  Agents are getting wise to the " i sucked up a grocery bag" line.  Hitting a stump and blowing out you lower unit should be covered.  An injector failing probably isnt.  My insurance company covered my entire rebuild but I have heard more often that they don't.  Probably internet rumor though too.  I agree about seeing who the extended warranty is thru.  The second carrier doesn't cover as much.  When I looked into extending my warranty i asked the salesman(cant remember the name of the company) if they covered injectors failing because they are pricey and its seems to be a common theme.  He told me that they don't.  For the cost of the warranty for 3 years I could almost replace all injectors.  I rolled the dice.
Got one!

Several good reason why I'm glad to have some local guys, Ken, Todd and Chris, with experience available at reclending.com who can answer all those types of questions about extended warranties, and also help you get financing for your new rig or motor.
