Motorguide steering torque

I'm having a big problem steering my trolling motor at higher speeds.  It's very difficult (almost impossible) to steer the thing.  It's a Motorguide Tour 82lb thrust foot-control motor.  I can't remember if this is a new issue or if it's always done this.  Anybody have this problem?  Maybe a steering cable is broken?

Is your mount attached properly and not moving as you steer?  I know I've had loose bolts before and it throws everything off.  Could also be a cable too tight or too loose, or slipping.  Might want to unscrew the top and have a look.

might be the cable is curled in a weird way from your pedal to the trolling motor head...that will make it harder to turn for sure

How do you go about adjusting how loose or tight the steering is? The steering on mine doesn't always stay going the same way it seems like its loose and needs to be tightened.

so when I got home from work I looked around and the bearing where the upper and lower shfts meet is toast.  Anyone know how difficult it would be to replace the bearing?  Looks like I'd have to pull the upper shat off and cut some wires.

I had the same proble with the same motor.  Mine was a very very slightly bent shaft.  I was not able to see the bend until I removed shaft and rolled on a flat surface.

guys - check out my poll in the boat forum on here - once you have the shaft bearing replaced, take a look at adding a troll perfect for about $20.  It allows you control the tension from the upper to lower shaft eliminating torque steer, and not requiring continuous head adjustment in high winds and waves.

Guys I have been running a troll perfect for about a year. Get one you won't regret it.

Easiest answer may be to swap that MG for a MK...LOL

I had an MG tour edition years ago, and I was constantly working on it.  I have had many Minn Kotas, which seem to be lower maintenance.  Could have just been one bad unit I had though, as it was my only MG.
