One of my best friends is coming up from Florida to fish St Clair with me for a week. He's a die hard bass fishing nut and I go down there occasionally to fish with him and he's hooked me up with some great FL fishing including an 11 lb'r! Well, I'm hoping I can show him some great smallie action and here's where my plan might need some help. I've been out there a few times this year and the last couple of times were pretty slow! Just not sure if I'm not finding the fish or if it was the mayflies or something else. Anyone know where the fish might be right now? I'm assuming deep (16-17ft) and I do most my fishing between the metro point and the nine mile tower. Is it just a matter of finding a school of them and firing them up? Would the river be hot yet? Some buddies of mine caught some nice fish drifting tubes in 30ft of water up there last year but it was later in the year. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated...posted, pm'd or emailed! vapermedic(at)gmail.com

This time of year it boils down to spending time out there to locate the fish. Once you find a group they ussually stay put for a few days, and then you have to find them all over again. Unless someone goes out there, finds fish, and sends you the coordinates, plan on tough fishing until you spend the time locating them. The vast majority of the lake is all 15 to 20 feet with suttle depth changes. Ussually the smallies are around the sand grass patches with scattered cabbage but its like that all over the place. Really, unless someone hands over coordinates, there's no getting around spending the time out there to find them.

Actually, that's the kind of info I need. We got some time to spend on the water so I'm really looking for the best way to spend that time finding them.
