Name's Ben.  Finally outsmarted the gatekeeper questions and was able to register.  Been reading this forum for about a year.  Im from Tecumseh but live in Lansing now.  Fish from a kayak mostly, been out on the Grand about ten times and hit a bunch of the inland lakes last summer.  Kinda fascinated with the big swimbaits like Huddlestons, Mattlures ect. but trying to get most of the techniques down also.  My biggest obstacle so far has been jigs.  I have had one total legit bite on a Buckeye Mop Jig so far. I'm also a little curious about bass clubs and what not but not having a boat seems to be a big obstacle although I am willing to show up and paddle my butt off as long as I get an hour headstart.

Hey Ben.  Welcome to GLB!  You should check out the Downriver Bass Club, I think I have the name right.  I know a couple guys that are part of it and love it and you don't need a boat to be a member.  If you don't see a reply check with Fiker on GLB, he is a member.

As far as jigs go set that Mop jig down for a while, it's too big to start with.  Pickup a Kustom Kicker Lil Punk or Wrecking Ball and start with those.  A smaller jig is always easier to get bites on at first and once you build a little confidence you can go back to the Mop if you like.

Good Luck and don't hesitate to ask questions anytime.

I do belong to the Down Rive Bass club.  In our club we try and keep the membership at about half boat owners, and half not.

Our club meetings are in Taylor.  Quite a hike from Lansing, but you're welcome to attend.  If fact anyone looking for a club is welcome.

Meetings are the 4th Tuesday of the month at the Gander Mountain in Taylor at 6:30.

Further info can be obtained at:

When I was first learning jigs I used Strike King's Bitsey Bug jigs a lot.  Also Chompers 1/4oz jigs with a Hula (twin tail) grub attached.

So much water.  So many lures.  So little time.

Welcome Ben! Cy and fiker hit the nail on the head. Down sizing will make a  big difference in how many bites and fish you will catch. I used the Bitsey Bug with a 101 pork or Eakin Jigs or ...list goes on.

Every size and style has its place but confidence is the key. Once you gain that KVD may be in trouble!!!

Welcome aboard Ben, don't worry about fisging from a kayak, i know a few bass boat owners that have or are in the process of adding a kayak to there fishing boat list. Last season GLB even had a drag your boat to the lake fishing day, i knew i should have kept the canoe, oh well. check out the site and sign up for the mad wags member events at lake st clair in may and one up north still to be determined, and you don't even need to start an hour early.

see ya around

Welcome to the site and I'm sure you will find plenty of good info and tips on here. Fishing from a kayak can be pretty fun and I have a couple buddies who take it pretty seriously. One of them even caught a master angler smallie of his kayak this past fall at a local river. I know DK has been looking into starting a kayak fishing discussion board so I bet your kayak input will sure help

Yea,

Welcome to the site ben.  I seem to recall Dan Kimmel was thinking about maybe opening a kayak specific section on the site.  Hopefully that's still a thing :)

djkimmel

Welcome, and yes, I will be starting a kayak fishing section on the forum in the next couple weeks.

Welcome to GLB. I always thought you were very limited to what you can do from a kayak. Until a couple of years ago when my step brother caught this Thresher shark when he lived in CA.

djkimmel

I've seen the kayak anglers on TV get towed all over the place by big fish. I'm not sure I will ever be ready for giant tarpon leaping over my head!!!! Let alone big sharks that might make me BAIT!!!
