What type of water is recommended to use when refilling your marine batteries? I got a couple that need a little water and not sure what to use. Thanks

Firefighter Jeff

Ive always heard distilled water was the best, but I know we have added regular water to our truck batteries at work as long as you were about to run the truck/charging system.  But I'm no expert.  :)

distilled water
The water out of a dehumidifier works as well

Distilled is recommended because the minerals in standard tap or bottled water increase scaling on the plates of lead acid batteries which, in turn, reduces their longevity and effectiveness.

That said, the bigger the battery, the less of a problem bottled water is because the mineral content to surface area decreases.  Well water, on the other hand, should be avoided at all costs.

Go buy yourself a gallon of distilled water at the grocery store... use it as necessary.  Keep the cap on tight and it will last you a long time.

all of that for about $.89 per gallon!  pretty cheap and simple but priceless maintenance on expensive batteries.
