Doug Cummings, Rick Woods Win the Lake Erie Wonderland Marine West Open With Huge 25-15 Sack of Smallies!

Rick Woods and Derek Cummings after their big win

Lake Erie Metro Park, MI 8/12/07 - Congratulations to GreatLakesBass.com member Jighead (Doug Cummings) and his fishing partner Rick Woods for the impressive and dominating 25 pounds 15 ounces winning sack of smallmouths. Doug reports they caught their fish on Yum products to win the awesome $10,000 first place prize courtesy of GreatLakesBass.com and tournament sponsor Wonderland Marine West.

Expect more on the story soon. It was another impressive weighin this year with the top 10 taking 20 pounds 11 ounces (my friend Ben Felton fishing with his lovely bride Hedy - way to go Hedy!). Several of the top 10 teams were represented by our growing family of GLB members including another quality showing by forum member Bryan Coates. I think Bryan and his partner had over 22 pounds to finish in the top 2 or 3 (I had to leave early). Bryan had a heck of a weekend too after winning the Ohio BFL on Saturday with over 21 pounds.

Lake Erie was a little tougher this year with some of the normal big sticks having tough days (helped me feel a little better only catching one four-pounder all day). It was another rougher than expected day on the water too with waves anywhere from 2 to 5 feet on a day reported to expect waves 2 feet or less (anyone know a NWS employee? I want to take him for a little boat ride :). This may go down as the year of the St. Clair River as far as the Wonderland Marine West Open is considered - with many of the top weight coming from the north this time... but I'll save the secret spots and lures for the anglers themselves to report - for those who want to anyway.

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.
