Lake Lansing again 10-25-2016

Not having a lot of time on this fall day, Derek and I returned to Lake Lansing for another fall day of fishing. We started out in the middle of the lake but despite seeing lots of small fish we only seemed to be attracting a few half-hearted bites from pike though a couple of them were Big!

One was so big I was tempted to let it eat my swim jig... but in the end I easily pulled the lure away from the big gator - I might have misjudged and lost a good lure.

It wasn't until we got closer to shore in shallower water that the bass bite picked up for. Well, for Derek at first. He had on a small, white shallow crankbait and the bass started jumping on that. He caught a dink and had a bigger bass try to pull the lure away. For a moment he had two bass on!! But the bigger one got away. That was definitely a clue though.

So we started working back and forth on this shallow flat and Derek was getting a few, most solid.

The Jackpot that had worked so well for me last time on Lake Lansing was not getting bit (other than pike swatting at it) so I switched to a bigger Strike King KVD 2.5 in bream color and finally started to get in on the action!



We went back and forth a few times and Derek was getting more bites than me with the smaller crankbait that also didn't dive as deep as my crankbait. I was hoping to get the bigger bass we saw earlier so I stuck to the bigger crankbait but threw it on 20 pounds test line and held the rod up higher to tick through the weeds a little better.


Luckily another bass thought my choice of crankbait was a good one - engulfed it!

Unfortunately that was the only other nice bass that nailed my crankbait!


After we wore out this section of flat we tried a number of other areas but could not manage anymore bass bigger than dinks. Derek landed 4 or 5 from the original area and that was about it. We probably should have rested the flat a while, and then came back and went through it again but we were looking for a bigger motherlode maybe - though you know what they say about leaving fish to find fish!
