Action Alert

Help Protect Communities from Coal Ash Waste

Two years ago, a coal ash storage pond at a Tennessee Valley Authority power plant ruptured, releasing 1 billion gallons of toxic slurry into streams, rivers, and communities. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates utilities nationwide generate more than 130 million tons of coal ash every year. And this ash contains a host of toxic chemicals and heavy metals, including chromium, arsenic, cadmium, and selenium. These metals are hazardous to people, fish, and wildlife. Yet, in many cases, coal ash is currently stored in unlined ponds and on the surface at power plants with little or no regulation to prevent spills or water pollution.

The EPA is now proposing two approaches to manage coal ash disposal and storage. One, which the League supports, would establish effective, protective, and enforceable national standards. Under the second approach, EPA would issue guidelines to states which they could adopt or ignore, and EPA could not enforce.

We've made real progress limiting air pollution from coal. EPA needs to adopt strong, national standards to limit pollution from what's left. Please contact the EPA today and urge the agency to issue protective national standards for coal ash disposal.
