Rod socks

I am in the process of trying to make some rod socks.  Like the ones on BBC, the Coles/Scotts style. I have some of the plastic mesh and was thinking about using heat shrink tubing on the end.  On the other end I am trying to figure out how they fold it over and have it stay.  If it stays rolled over at all.  Does anyone have any of these socks?  Do they work well?  If it has heat shrink tubing, does that work/holdup?  How is the reel end, and what did they do?  If I could figure out the reel end I should be able to make these with no problem. Looking for some info/help.

I made some similar to the Stick Jackets. I bought a roll of electrical sheathing for protecting wiring. It is a weaved nlyon material the same as they use in a 1 1/2" size and cut it to lenght. On the ends I used a soldering iron to melt the cut end fibers together to prevent fraying. Then I rolled them in and shrink wrapped the tip end. For the reel end I just rolled it in a few times and so far the have held. If they do unroll I will just reroll and use a piece of thread to secure. I like the material because it actually gives the rod protection and doesn't mildew after getting wet.

found this and am going to order some.  They put burn the ends and put a grommet in.  It looks like they are dipping some ends in liquid plastic to keep the rod tips from coming through. 

you could make 5 -- 5 footers per roll.   probably cost 4.00 each with shipping.

That is the stuff I used. I had a 250 foot roll left over from an electrical job I did. I believe it was the 1 1/2" diameter to fit bait casting rods. I just melted the tips of the strands together were they crossed. Then I rolled the end beck inside the opening about an inch deep for the tip end. Then I rapped it tightly closed with electrical tape. On the reel end I melted it the same but only rolled it in about 1/4 inch multiple times. Then took some braided line like power pro or simlilar and stitched it secure. If it wasn't for getting the material for free, I would of probably just bought the Stick Jackets for $8 on ebay however.

cy's grandma made me some real nice ones from rip stop nylon. stuff is cheeeeaaaap

  first try is about a 6 out of 10.   The heat shrink tubing worked sweet. But I'm going to have to do some test runs to work with this material.

Well, Redbone ... Its not the rod socks I have a problem with ... its usually the rod shoees I cant get to fit..... Im also a EEE so try to find that size in a 6'10"
