GVSU poised for another National Title

Went to the Lakers game Saturday and watched Grand Valley play North Dakota State. A big rivalry match up that until Saturday was 2-2. GVSU scored 27 points in the first quarter! Then, it got a little ugly. Needless to say the conditions were tough, cold and a very strong wind that blew right down the field. Passing or kicking into the wind was tough and Grand Valley deferred and took the wind instead of the ball first quarter. North Dakota was bigger, but Grand Valley has a wicked passing attack. They scored those 27 points without a back in the backfield and without running the ball except for a quarterback scramble or two. They do have a back Astin Martin that is small but super quick. He played Div. 1 but then had a mother who was very ill and he gave up the Div. 1 to play at GVSU which would allow him to be much closer to home. The game ended up 30-20. Several fumbles and a lost onside kick almost let the Sioux back in. One more game next week semis with Delta State (Mississippi) and then back to Florence, Alabama for the Division II National Championship. GVSU's basketball team is also doing well, number 4 in the country Div. 2. One of their big men broke his foot so that hurt.

Notes...GVSU has won 26 straight games, the longest winning streak in college football...GVSU is 83-5 in its last 88 games and the Laker senior class is now 50-4...GVSU is 19-2 in its last 21 playoff games, including 11 straight wins at home...GVSU is 48-2 when ranked number one...The Lakers are 44-3 at home in their last 47 games...Cullen Finnerty is 49-4 as a starting QB overall and 12-1 in the NCAA DII playoffs.

I'd have to research that. I do know that Kurkus (sp) who was the top receiver the year Curt Ames QB just signed with Denver. Ames is a coach with Kelley at CMU, but I just heard Kelley is leaving CMU and is going to coach at Cincinnati replacing the guy that got the MSU job.

ESPN2 is going to televise the GVSU national Div. II semifinal game at Grand Valley State's Lubbers Stadium Sunday night at 7:00 Live! against Delta State Mississippi.
