I am going to be fishin these lakes for the first time ever this weekend. Has anyone been out on the water and have a report on the water temps?  Or on any of the lakes that are close?  Thanks

MIBasser

Higgins was at 57* on Sunday.  Good luck!

Thanks for your reply. Hopefully we get some decent weather and can spent a lot of time on the water learning these lakes

Man you should go to another lake, Houghton is one of the worst lakes in Michigan.  The bite is super tough. Higgins lake might be better, don't know never been there.  I hear Missaukee is an excellent smallmouth lake and not to far from there.

Houghton can be a killer fall bass lake IF you can find the few real key spots. That's the tricky part. Feast or more likely famine. I do way better in the spring and some in the summer. I've only tried to figure out the fall fishing twice so far so don't ask me for the secret fall spots. I don't have them. I have seen the anglers who do sack up 4-pound average catches numerous times over the years though so they are there.

Higgins has a bunch of real big smallies in it. More pretty water than fish-filled water, but it isn't too hard to look at a map and figure out the areas to concentrate on. Think hard bottom... That's it. The whole trick. You can see those BIG smallies coming from a long ways off too in that crystal clear water!

Houghton is the biggest inland lake in Michigan and Higgins is close so they can seem challenging. I guess it depends on how much you like a challenge. I like variety so I'm glad they are around.

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.

I agree with you Dan, I like the great variety of lakes we have to choose from in our state. I also love the challenge of finding bass in big water especially when it's my first time fishing a lake. I spend a good deal of time on Lake Huron and have fished Hardy many times as well, and have a blast finding bass. This year we spent a day on St. Clair for the first time and hopefully can get out to the Saginaw Bay before years end. Thanks for you input
