Experiencing network datacenter connectivity issues again

If you are having intermittent problems connecting to GreatLakesBass.com it is not just you. There's been a problem at the Provo Utah datacenter again with connectivity since about 4:30 this morning.

My webserver has been running the whole time again but none of us can get to it at times, or part of the time the connection has been coming and going - dropped packets and latency issues.

I haven't seen a message that all is fixed yet and email connections are still coming and going so you may still experience times when the website loads and times when it won't load.

I'm still working on finding a compatible new web host so I can move all of my websites to a more stable, but still affordable web server. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

You need a new host, man... I know we emailed about it before, but I just finished migrating almost my entire data center and client hosting over to Digital Ocean.  Very happy so far and price is just about too good to be true.  Now I've got all of the tasks delegated, replication and load balancing on the database servers and RedHat Spacewalk managing the software packages and updates on the entire stack. ...can you tell I'm excited about it?  :)    Linode and Digital Ocean are neck and neck for pricing.

PS: When you do, put NGINX out in front of Apache to handle your static files.  I just finished doing that with a client's entire hosting network and page load times are up over 200% with overall memory and processor usage down by 1/3 or more.  PM me if you want details.  It's about a 10 minute switchover, max.

Yeah, 220...221, whatever it takes. ;D

You guys that know networking and data management amaze me.  Everyone I work with comes to me with network issues, even though it isn't even remotely close to what I do, but I at least know enough to fix simple issues.  I am very glad that people like you exist so I have a "life line" to call when things get over my head.

No 9er. Not yet anyway...

I have to warn Slipkey posting that kind of stuff in an open fishing forum has been known to cause widespread damage and destruction!!! ;D

Nerds... ::)

I just have one server but even the thought of moving all that makes my head hurt... that's why I pay extra to have a managed server. That... and I don't want LAPORTE or anyone else to get hurt too bad! ;D I like working on websites a lot more than I like working on servers myself...

I tried firm language the other day on my present host and suddenly they've come up with a possible option that might work. No timeline yet but if they do what they are saying in the next month or two I will put off the adventure of finding a new host that I can make work while learning all the little nuances, tricks and limits of the new host's setup and management all over again. I can't remember all my exceptions for various accounts and clients all at once so I have to go through a bunch of notes each time I look at new software and related processes and equipment.

Because all those big and weird words aren't really that much fun for me either most of the time. The only load balancing I really want to do is making sure the old Ranger is not too light or too heavy in the nose!! :D I'll bet Gerald Swindle could have big fun with a thread like this!! ;D

Once I get an idea that my host can do what they're now saying (apparently I'm not the only person using firm language... :o) and a timeframe I may stay with them. The devil you know kind of situation maybe...?

I still may talk more nerd talk privately with you at some point Slipkey. I think I had another person or two offer advice also. Hopefully it is noted somewhere in my various notes and todo lists. There's some things I want to do that I can get my present host to do at no cost but the more I know and can tweak the better and smoother the results.

I have to renew my main SSL certificate within the week and that is an adventure each year because of the way I use it to cover shared services... I think I finally have the right notes this year to smooth just that transition.

I did just check my list of hosting companies owned by the EIG 'international conglomerate' to make sure Digital Ocean and linode aren't on the list. It wouldn't do to jump from one of their properties to another either...

The list is up from 54 hosting companies to 60 as of the end of February... The first thing I do every time someone nice suggests an alternative hosting company is to see if EIG owns them yet. I don't think they have pushed every company they own into the same facility but they have done so with a lot of the bigger, better known web hosts they've bought.

I'd be okay with them if they'd get their network in that building fixed but I'm not sure they can or ever will after the roller coaster ride since they moved me last March. Love the actual server. That works great. Like the actual techs I work with most of the time. But that building, or at least the part I'm in, has some fundamental issues. It appears to be big fundamental issues considering how many people are on the various support channels screaming each time something happens.
