McCarter

I fished the first event this past saturday.  Very cool trail.  John is a great tournament director and the $320 big bass award for 17 boats was awesome.  I dont think i have ever fished an event where a sponsor kicked in that much extra money or any money for that matter for a big bass pot.  We had 3rd big bass which didnt win us anything but made us feel a little better.

We started out the morning fishing the heli pad near colchester and picked up our biggest of the day.  Then i lost one that would have went 4 lbs when it jumped about 20 feet from the boat.  That stung, but we thought we were onto something.  Not long after, i put our second keeper in the boat. A 3lber.  we are catching all our fish on the Nemsis Goby in 3 colors.  Dark cinnamon/purple, Real Goby, and Erie Glow.   We fished around a bit more and caught some sheeps and shorts.  I wanted to go check out the rock piles i got from Kev so we headed that way.

Both Kev and Garza had fished these piles the past couple days and both caught good bags from them.  i was thinking it was a sure thing, until we got there.  The first pile produced a couple shorts.  the next produced a couple sheephead.  and the last produced one barely keeper.  We thought they moved shallow so we headed into 8 feet of water.  There were fish scattered on rock piles up there but most were small.  My partner hooked into a good one that came off on its way to the boat.  Thats 2 fish that would have went 4 that we have lost so far.

After fishing a couple more shallower spots with limited success, we tried the green cottage rocks.  nothing but shorts there.  We had to change pace and find some better fish.  so we headed to the River.  We fished the end of Boblo island and started creaming them good with a verticle jigged drop shot.  The current was very strong here and i have never really fished this way, so it took me about 20 minutes to catch on.  But once i did, i stopped losing all my partners 3/4 ounce weights and started catching fish.  We filled our limit here and culled out about 8 times.  problem was, the fish we were culling werent much better than the ones we were catching.

We ended up with 14.00 lbs even.  It took 20.20 so were were only 6 lbs from winning. LOL.  not our best day out there.  But it was beautiful, calm day.  We caught them from the time we got out there til we left.  And the best thing, we caught them on my goby.  Thats will make ya feel good everytime.

I didnt see Mark there, but sounds like he was there and i just missed him.

Congrats to the winners.  Big bass was only 4.40.  Not a typical lake erie big bass weight.  But it was tough fishing.  I think we were in 8th place with 14 lbs.  That dont happen everyday.

McCarter himself :-\'
