On the water behavior

Without knowing the whole story in the recent incident involving Keith Poche and Ish Monroe ( http://www.bassfan.com/news_article.asp?ID=5119#.VLp2D1q6a1w), what do you think should be allowed on the water. I know I've witnessed several confrontations while Marshaling. One led to a suspension. There have been times when I've witnessed competitors having verbal exchanges that would embarrass a Marine. Does the competition breed that kind of hostility, or is it the money they get, or may be not get. Physical confrontations aside, I feel that profanity from an athlete during a competetion has gotten too excessive.

He is one of there stars.  But if the police had enough to arrest him you would think he should be DQ'd.  The one report said he did get a check.  Time will tell I guess.  Sad it happened.  In todays world I am sure outside people will get involved.

By the sound of it
Poche hit Ish's boat
He shouldn't have been going that fast to hit a parked or still boat
And then Ish shouldn't have been on Poche's boat.
My opinion would be Poche is a cry baby that couldn't back up his mouth
It ended up being a pushing match were Ish is now charged with Battery

As far as what's allowed on the water
Your breaking no law by swearing. It's not some thing that your mother would be proud of
So I feel it's up to the individual and his sponsors on how he represents himself
There's more then a few foul mouths out there that have hearts of gold and those that don't swear
that don't have good intentions.

Growing up with sports and playing sports my entire life I can understand that competition can get heated and sometimes things are said that shouldn't be said. Swearing and trash talk is one thing but when things get physical that's taking it too far.

That being said, guys at the professional level of any sport need to carry themselves more like professionals. Seems pro sports nowadays are more accepting of this kind of behavior. Both these guys are in the wrong and should be issued some kind of fine or suspension

Waterfoul

Swearing in public is breaking the law in certain circumstances... in front of minor children for instance.  You can also be charged with public lewdness if it goes to far and someone complains.

Does anyone actually ever get cited for these kind of offenses?  Probably not.  Probably not enough in my opinion.  I hate hearing grown men and women cussing and swearing.  I think it's immature and unnecessary.  An occasional dam mit! or something isn't so bad but I've heard people us the F word 4 or 5 times in a single sentence.  It just shows their total ignorance and lack of respect for themselves and everyone around them.

In the case of Poche and Monroe... they should know better and BASS should do their best to put an end to this type of behavior with penalties and DQ's.
Addicted to fishing.  All the time, any species, anywhere!!  Especially in West Michigan!!!

There are so many conflicting reports but some of it makes sense and doesn't make sense so we probably don't have the real story, but they both got dq'd from the tournament so it appears they both played a part.

I wish there wasn't as much swearing anywhere, and that people would act fairly adult and professional much of the time. Just think it would simplify things and stop some things from ever happening. Being fair and following the Golden Rule - treat others as you wish to be treated wouldn't hurt either.

There was some talk of showing more 'raw' things that may happen during Bassmaster events. I know some people are in to that kind of thing. I'm not. I just watch for the fishing. Most of the time the 'raw' stuff is because someone isn't following the Golden Rule.

Being a tournament director I always try to live by the golden rule when dealing with others on the water or off, but I can see getting mad at someone hitting my boat. Would I go that far as they did most likely not but then I do not have a pile of money in my boat and sponsor deals to deal with. They should of dealt with it more like grown men and took it to BASS and filed a report on it.

Manxfishing

I've read the apologies online

And I my opinion
Poche is a **deleted**
His story keeps changing on how he hit Ish's boat
And I don't condone Ish jumping on his boat
But we was pushed and fell backwards. It's not a life threating thing

djkimmel

It does seem like the story keeps changing... hmmmm... if someone has a worse reputation some people will take advantage of that too. I would not judge though unless I was there or knew someone real well who was there so I got the real story.

If the lockmaster was going to not let Poche through that is a telling piece of information but I don't even know if that part is true...?? Oh well. They both got dq'd so there's a 'takes two to tango' going on enough for B.A.S.S. anyway.

From a guy that saw the whole thing

From Lonestarbass.com

Mike Kernan.

Well, I was not only in the lock with Keith and Ish, I was up against Ish's boat on the opposite side. Here is how it all panned out.

The tournament director asked that we put our boat numbers and name on a piece of paper to show the lock master. Here, they take that information and give you a number. When you come back through, you give them that number. So Keith came in and took it off pad, then walked up front and put his trolling motor down. His boat still had momentum, and the wind at his back was not helping. Instead of slowing his boat down with the trolling motor, he was pulling out his papers and not paying attention. His troll motor shaft hit Ish's rub rail. It probably hit it hard enough to put stress cracks on it, but I couldn't see visible damage. Immediately Ish said what the ****. Keith took the lashing for a second then finally said it was an accident. Ish said he was going to climb in his boat and whip his behind. Then Keith asked him if he thought he did it on purpose. Ish said it didn't matter, that Keith is always doing stupid shoot. Then Ish said again he was going to jump into his boat and kick his behind. After this second time, Keith said come on. Ish hopped up and jumped into. Keith's boat. Keith side stepped and spun and let Ish go right off the other side. But Keith also lost his footing and fell backwards onto a competitors boat. Only his feet and legs went into the water. Ish was all the way in but grabbed the side of the boat and did not fully submerge.

Each returned to their boats. A few more words were exchanged. Last was Keith yelling 'that's unprofessional!' And the lock master yelling it was over.

They both added to the problem

Ish is a s-bag and an all-around horrible ambassador to the sport. This event only solidifies that. He's shown his true colors many times over in official events and at appearances he's made at shows and conferences. I don't know what happened, but i don't believe a word that comes out of his mouth and never will. I'm sure there's shared fault - but i wouldn't hesitate to say ish is just flat out liar. he's entitled, arrogant and unprofessional.

I've been able to figure that out before any of this happened, so whatever really happened doesn't change the truth about him.

I feel that professional  athletes  should  be role models  in the sport they represent . Both of these   guys are ambassadors in our sport. I say, they both deserve   everything they have coming to them.

peterman9000

The guy who retaliates always get punished more severely in pro sports, especially when they have a bad rap. I agree both should have been DQ'ed. But c'mon, jail time for pushing someone when the guy who just caused a collision due to carelessness gets away from the law unscathed?

Good story, thanks to the OP for the link!

bob o

overreaction. I've been in that lock and its tight I can't see it rated for 20-30 boats. I would have found fish in TOHO. the winner did. never got close to the locks
