Erie's topic has made me think of another topic that I would like to know more about.  Being a west sider I don't do much with a drop shot due the fact that most lakes I fish are river mouth lakes.  I have tried to get up to speed with a shakey head but I been slow to do so.

I am interested to learn what you folks are using for rod and line combos for both of these techniques.  By rod and line, I mean length and action of rod and type and test of line.  I would also like to know if you have any bait or tackle tips about either of these topics.

Thanks,

Cy

This season I'll be using that new Cumara I told you to buy for drop shotting.  It's a 7'2" medium extra fast.  I prefer a light braid... 12-14 lb or so with a 6-8' floro leader.

This season I'll be using my new Outlaw rod for shakeyhead fishing.   It's a 7'6" medium rod that I am going to string up with 10 lb BPS Florocarbon and give that a try.

As for baits you're on your own.  But that new color Wayne is peddling won't work, so don't even bother throwing it.  ::)

Yeah, your right!  I didn't even bother to buy any of those crazy things.  ;D   ;)

But if any of you are wondering what Waterfowl is referring to, he is talking about the new St Clair Crayfish - Premium Laminated Tubes by Xtreme Bass Tackle.  They are available in 5" size, a 4" size and in the 2.5" drop shot tube.  If any one would like any please feel free to let me know I and I will make sure you are taken care of.  You can check out the new St Clair Crayfish and the entire Xtreme product line at http://stores.ebay.com/Xtreme-Bass-Tackle

Thanks for the opportunity to plug Xtreme Waterfowl!!!  ;D

BTW, I bought a Cumara at the GR show.  It is going to be my new pitchin' rod, 7'2 MH.

i use a st. croix avid (scIII) 7'0" ML /x-fast for drop shot, spooled with 6lb gamma and more recently seagur carbon pro (6lb). its virtually impossible to pull the hooks with this rig. make sure you get a spinning reel with good drag too.

i like both the chompers and zoom drop-shot worms as well as pretty much any finesse plastic.

for shakey head, i'd step up to a M/Fast w/ 10lb floro.

7' medium for shakey head w/ a fast action for shakin', and a 7'-7'6" medium, fast action for droppin', so you can sweep into them instead of yanking.  I use 8 lb. floro for both, sometimes 10 w/ the shakey if it's denser grass.

Shakey headin' last year I used my B & R outlaw rod, 7', with 8# fluorocarbon.  Worked ok.  I'll use it again.

The guy that fishes a shakey head like nobody else I know though is Bender.  It might be his secret bait, I don't know, but he even caught a big un on Ovid at the open last Fall.

I used the same rod for drop shotting, though and frankly, I think I'd rather have a faster tip.  I'll try something different this year.
So much water.  So many lures.  So little time.

I know this is an older topic but...... Has anyone tried the new Arkie shaky head. The "U-Shaky Head"?
I first saw it being used on  Hank Parker when he and the boys did a stream fishing show in paddle kyacks. The hooks then turned up at Wallyworld with a craw of somekind. I took the craw off and put on a 3X floating strike king craw. I like the looks and action over the old shaky head lead head hooks.
  Whats' your thoughts guys?

This is what I will be trying this year, they are some quality made jigheads for a good price. You can get the football or round and he will make them in any size hook you want in multiple colors. The problem I have with the screw lock jigheads is I like using the cyberflex worms like the finesse worms from strike king, and it takes some time to get those suckers on the screw, but with some determination you can get them on there. I found the cyberflex material floats best and makes for a good action on a shakey head.

Heres the link for those screw lock shakey heads.

I am going to be trying some new jigs by Fin-tech.
http://www.jigfish.com/nuckleballjig.htm

Check the jig out in the 2008 April edition of Bass Times in the industry innovation section.

very intriguing design and they have one just for shakey heading in their catalogue. Their title shot jig looks very good as well.
