I was just wondering if anyone uses the 100% fluorocarbon from Berkley? I also was wondering if they thought the strength of it was better then other fluoros that they have tried...My problem is that i set the hook a little harder than most and tend to break vanish too much.Any insight would be appreciated...Thanks

Cy

Pig,

I used the new Trilene 100% most of last year.  I really like it and will use it again this year.  I have a rather hard hook set and it held up really well for me.  I don't think this stuff and Vanish are even in the same league.  Try it and let me know what you think, but I think you will be pleased.

I think you will find ANY floro line will be stronger than Vanish.  Vainish is at the bottom of the pile when it comes to floro lines.

I haven't tried berkley yet but can't believe how many people like vanish , had nothing but bad luck with that stuff . Must be good marketing or something .

I am the odd one that really likes Vanish.  I feel it is not as stiff as other flourocarbon's.  I have not had a problem breaking fish off at all.  I use 10 lb Vanish for drop shot, tubes and dock fishing.  Last fish I broke off was 4 years ago under a dock.

My advice is.....TRY BPS Flourocarbon, it is the only Flouro that I like, but to be fair, I have not tried the berkley 100%

Vanish in my mind was a prototype put on the market to compete with the new companies. It has not been refined since and in my opinion is garbage. The Transition was just a little refined version of vanish and to help us blind people see a bite! still garbage. Ive tried them all. Vanish,Gamma,Pline,Seagaur and Im sure A few more. My #1 line in Flouro is BPS. Theres is very abraision resistent, and in my book the #1 is handles well. Give it a little silcone lining and it tops.-skeeterman-(ps.im gonna check this new 100% deal out from berkley. and ill let ya know. maybe its a refined deal and it will be what were all lookin for???)

I actually just ordered some from BPS yesterday. I had poor success with Vanish so I have been slow get onboard with flurocarbon lines and have stuck to the 'tried and true' mono and braid. When I decided to buy something new and try again, I was about to skip right past the Berkley - then I happened to notice the customer reviews from the online ordering area and they were pretty impressive. Sounds like a night & day difference from Vanish. I actually ended up ordering spools of two different sizes. This line sounds like a winner - hopefully I will be one of those people with high praise once I get to using it for a while this spring.

I talked to a Berkley rep about the problems some have with break-offs, and his response was that you buy from Wal-Mart or any other retail store, it could just be old line that has been there a while. He suggested buying from Bass Pro or Cabelas, someplace that has a higher turn over rate. I've personally never had a problem with Vanish. I've used it for everything from flipping with 17lb. test to smallies and finesse with 10lb. test. 10 is as light as I go, I just do't feel comfortable with anything lighter.

i've only ever de-spooled and completley re-spooled a reel in a tournament once.
it was with 8lb vanish... broke off 3 fish on the hooksets.... and they were 12"-14" bass. i was lucky and had a sample pack of stren easy cast 8lb mono in the boat and never looked back. i was surprised that berkley would put their name on that crap... it has made me wary to go back.

Justin,

I hear ya bro, I had the exact same experience, except one sweet difference.  My cousin was the one with Vanish spooled on his reel, and I was in the front of the boat laughing.  I had to dig some old junk spool of mono out of the bottom of my rod locker, so he could get that crap off of his reel.  You couldn't pay me to put vanish on my reel, unless maybe I was Crappie fishing.

Hey, was I with you on that one?  I seem to remember you re-spooling a reel at one of the first tournies you and I ever fished together.

I too am trying a spool of BPS Floro this year.

no mike i haven't touched the stuff in years.. you might be thinking of prefishing or something... i usually respool the rods that need it before a tourney.

The BPS XPS Fluoro is good line, so is the Cabela's No-Vis Xtra.  I have fished them both and like them both.

I am really surprised that people don't like Vanish.  I understand it is not as strong as other lines, but I still don't understand how you guys have broken so many fish off.  I have probably used 15,000 yards of 10lb vanish in the last 4 years with no problems at all.  I think you guys either have wicked hard hooksets or I am a sissy!!   ;D

I've tried Stren fluor when they made it.
Vanish when it first came out.
BPS fluoro.
P Line Halo
And transition Vanish.

The one I liked the best, that you can still buy is the BPS.
I didn't like Halo.  I found it twisted up too much.  I went through the whole spool way too quickly.
I switched to the transition, and it worked just fine from June to Sept.
This fluoro/brand thing seems to be a really personel choice.  I've talked to some of you guys that really like the Halo.  Some don't.  Seems that way with all the lines.

I've never heard anybody say anything bad about Seaquar.

I have heard a lot of you talk about "getting a bad batch".  But only with fluoro carbon lines.
Is it really that hard to have a quality control when producing a Fluoro carbon line?  Jack is our plastic expert, and even though I don't believe Fluoro crystals fall into that category, perhaps he knows?

So much water.  So many lures.  So little time.

I never had a lot of problems with Vanish breaking, I did have some problems with knot strength though.  My biggest issue with Vanish was line memory.  Like Rick I had the same experience with Halo.  I think memory is always a problem with Fluoro it is just the nature of the beast, for that matter I think any line that is abrasion resistant has higher memory.  I have had similar memory issue with co-polymer lines.

I have done a little research on the vanish issue and spent some time talking to different reps, and also Shaw Grigsby and Davy Hite when they were at D&R Sports in the past both of whom are berkley guys.  They all informed me that in doing research with berkley they found that berkley's fluoro line is the strongest when used with a trilene knot at the hook.  Both Shaw and Hite complained to berkley the same complaints we have and spent months at the testing facility. Both saw this with their own eyes that the line was breaking very easily at the knot when any other knot other than the trilene was used.  The only explanation that berkley could give was that the stress other knots placed on the line caused the line to shatter like glass at the knot causing for easy breakage even while cinching the knot down.  I am still using 8 lb vanish today not only for bass but for walleye also and since changing to the trilene knot as I was told to do I have had zero break offs.  Oddly though is that a palomar knot on a drop shot was never mentioned as a problem something about the knot being further up the line everyone felt did not cause for failures.

cr

I was using the palomar knot when I tried Vanish so maybe that was the problem , but the other problem I have with it is that it frays so easy when tying any knot . I tried the improved clinch but not the trilene knot , but had to tie several to get one good one without fraying the line at the knot . Maybe just poor knot tying but dont get it with p-line.
