Hunlee, you need to release the Bass and keep the Walleye.  I'm with DK, try long walks with the wife.  Walleye are lower in calories anyway and taste way better.

Get some nice fillets, and put them on a cedar plank.  Cook over charcoal until nice and flakey.  Then throw away the bass and eat the plank (it will probably taste better).  I love catching them, but have no desire to eat them.  Especialy with all of the perch and bluegills around ;D

cr

Hunlee , the healthiest way is don't cook it at all , as in ...SUSHI

Filet boneless clean with cold cold water to firm up filet.  Put in bag or container and drizzle with olive oil and a bit of white wine(or beer but gives it a totally different taste).  Shake garlic salt and parmesan cheese on them.  Place them in fridge for at least 6 to 24 hours..the longer they sit the more flavor they soak up.  Place them on some tin foil dump any remaining juice on each filet, put a little salt and pepper and more parmesan cheese and a small amount of butter on them, put them in the oven at 350 or place the tin foil on the grill.  When the fish flakes away enjoy!!!

30 some odd years ago when I started tournament fishing with my father we didnt always practice catch and release and when we did we still had a few fish die in the livewell so I grew up eating bass, we dipped them in egg and rolled the fillets in ritz crackers and it wasnt bad but I couldnt think of any other way to make it not taste fishy.

I know your looking for another way other than frying but what about changing oil's?
maybe try baking in olive oil or italian dressing then some lemon juice?

I personely wouldnt kill a bass for eating nor have I ate one in about 20 years and Id ask that you not kill them either BUT that is your call and you have every right to do so without critisicm.

I recomend that you take the dead bass from tournaments and let the healthy fish go, if you let the tournament director know in the morning youd probobly get some plus I bet if you showed up at weigh inns in tournaments that you dont fish and ask the directer for a couple fresh deads youd get plenty of fish from them as well and would be helping assure the fish is not wasted.

I recommend eating the dead tournament bass, as well.  Rejuvenade and Please Release Me make for some mighty tasty marinade.  Yum.

fowlmouth

Didn't someone say Rejuvinade is mostly garlic? add some butter and maybe a few capers to your livewell, then knock the sides off the dead ones and grill 'em up!

I imagine it would not hurt St. Clair to thin the herd a little. There are a small percentage of bass being kept by regular anglers out there. I'm not so sure about Erie at the moment. Not sure anyone else is either... it's a big lake.

But... I have a feeling hunlee is a red meat and potato's kind of guy actually and too busy being friend to all and fighting off women from what he says... does he really have time left over to fish??

Only time I ever fried up a bass, I had every cat in the neighborhood at my house. Walleye, perch, gill, crappie etc. are much better.

djkimmel

Cold water helps and smallies are better (from my childhood memories of when we ate everything and I mean EVERYTHING... well, except dogfish although there was this little old lady in Sunfield who had a dogfish recipe...??), but yes, walleye and panfish taste much better. Catfish too. I know people who love to eat pike, but I never really liked them. Strong flavor and too many bones a lot of the time.

Hunlee - the smaller bass are better to eat and the bigger bass make more smaller bass faster which means more bigger bass later. Question - you live somewhere near Gowen, don't you?

A few years back at the last Michigan Bass Federation State Championship that was held on Lake Charlevoix, the little lakeside restaurant cooked up a few smallmouth that didn't survive after day 1.  I was walking by and the cook asked me if I wanted to try some, he couldn't sell it, didn't have the proper liscensing to sell fresh catch but he gave me a plate full.  He said the key was to cube it up, he used about 1.5" sq. cubes completely covered in batter and deep fried. He also said he soaked it for a minute or two in ice water before he dipped them in the batter mix.  I still remembered he used Tony Chachere's Cereole mix, it was outstanding.  Hands down that was some of the finest fresh fish I have ever eaten, but haven't eaten it since then.  Like Savage told me right after that, its like eating one of our own, like a GM worker putting 100,000 miles on an import..just not right.  For now I'll stick to pike, walleye, and perch....but would definitely eat a couple smallmouth a year...someday.

None of the Bass I caught today looked very appetizing ;D

Me think hunlee's just trying to stir up a storm.

Never liked the taste of bigger bass....it's like eating a catfish sucking up poop all day.
