How can I put the netting on without messing up the paint underneath? I stretch the netting over the whole bait then clamp it on the bottom, but it destroyed the paint underneath. I can only be so careful. I have to pull it tight to get it to work right. Any thoughts would be nice.

I use forceps.  I have one pair that is straight, and one that is curved.  The curved pair is good for pulling the netting under the belly.  I've scratched up more than one crank on the bottom when pulling the netting too tight.  I also have 4 or 5 small little clamps that are coated with red rubber.  They are pretty good too.

Forceps are a great idea. However the netting is actually whats destroying the paint. I finally got the dick nites, and its awesome.

You might be spraying the paint too thick, and/or it might not be completely dry when you are removing the scaling.  When you say the paint is destroyed underneath, do you mean the scaling is slightly raised, rough, and (for lack of a better word) wavy?

When I clamp the netting down it is digging in to the base coat, then when I pull it tight the netting is scratching a bunch of paint off. Maybe I just have to be real careful. I wonder if I can wash the netting and soften it up a little. Do you have any idea where I can find the netting with a square pattern? I have seen it on a few different baits online. Something different.

It sounds like your paint isn't heat set.  That would keep it soft enough to dig into the basecoat and scratch off your scales.  For square netting, I have been using screen door screen.  It is a little difficult to work with, but it gives the bait a different look.
