PETA proposes to take control of Grand Haven lighthouses, to create its "fish empathy" headquarters

GRAND HAVEN -- If PETA can't protect horses in Holland, the animal rights organization is going to try to hook the public on safeguarding fish in Grand Haven.

The national group on Wednesday asked the National Park Service if it could take control of the iconic Grand Haven lighthouses, where it would serve faux fish sticks in a cafe there and inform people about the alleged torment fish endure when hooked or netted.

Earlier this year, the park service declared the Grand Haven lights were available under the National Lighthouse Preservation Act, which allows the transfer of ownership to groups to preserve the beacons.

A representative for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said the light would serve as the national headquarters for its fish empathy project.

The center would display a 300-square-foot quilt that pays tribute to the billions of fish needlessly killed for their flesh or abused by anglers, PETA said. The group also would open a cafe at the lighthouses serving faux fish sticks and other vegetarian dishes.

And every visitor 12 and under will be given a free plush toy fish emblazoned with the tagline "Fish Are Friends, Not Food!"

PETA has tried unsuccessfully to snare other lighthouses, which are available to federal agencies, state and local governments, nonprofit corporations and community development organizations.

There must be something in those faux fish sticks that affects the human brain in a bad way...

The scary part is these nuts take themselves seriously.

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.

so how are they proposing to preserve the beacons? I got to think there will be more vandalism from people oposing peta. Don't see how this would in any way be goo for the preservation of the lighthouse.

I'll stop by with my daughters.  We can always use new stuffed animals.  Hopefully they'll look like the Nemo characters.  They are so cute!  I would then dangle them from my daughters' Hannah Montana and Barbie fishing poles for all to see and admire.  My girls will love it!  Teach 'em young.

That might be one of the dumbest ideas PETA has every had.  I would love to the see ramifications of PETA putting a head quarters up in the one the largest Great Lakes fishing port in the state.  I can just see the salmon & laker guts covering the outside of the lighthouse.  I hope Grand Haven is smarter then that!  I never liked PETA to begin with but I am really starting to like them less and less all them time.

I have to be good because otherwise, I picture my eternal punishment at the end of my days being locked in a never-ending PITA 'bored' meeting with a bunch of their 'members' discussing all their 'critical' plans, schemes (and money-raising stunts) forever and ever. Just terrifies me to no end thinking about the entire experience for even a second or two! :o
