Hit the water in the morning out of Blossom Heath w/Tbone and cgabbeart.  Fished some shallow areas and breakwalls to begin the morning with no luck.  Terry did catch a mid-30s pike on a jerkbait, but now smallies to be seen.  Moved over to Ford Cove in 6-8 foot of water for the remainder of the afternoon and caught 6 smallies and a tiger musky.  Three smallies came on mid to deep cranks (one two pounder on a parrot colored Bomber Fat A, a 4 pounder on a custom goby colored DT 16 and a 6.2 pounder on a custom bluegill color).  The other three (two three pounders and a 2 pounder) came on the dropshot (Nemesis goby KLK color).  Here is a pic of my new personal best 6.2 pounder:

Wow...good timing for this report.  I thought about putting the boat away this week, but now I think I need to make at least one more trip this weekend.  Friday is looking pretty good. ;D  Couple of questions:

What was the water temp?

Was anyone at the gate taking money at Blossom Heath, or was it self-serve?  And when you say Blossom Heath, you're talking about the ramp right behind the white building, right?

Doug, water temp was right around 45/46.  It is the launch directly behind the white/cream Blossom Heath building.  No one was at the gate.

Love those Great Lakes Bass!!! Great job catching a real trophy!

nice fish and pic Jeff.

dont put the boat away yet guys the weathers just like spring and the fish are still biting.
The nicest thing about this time of year is its not sight fishing and the bite can be just as great.

Ive got buddies in southern california that called me this month talking about great bass fishing on a couple of my old favorite spots...15lb plus days...wooo hoo lol
we can do that with our best 3 fish here in the fall, we are blessed to have it soo good.
PROLONG CABIN FEVER....GO BASS FISHING  ;)

Hey Jeff,
Send the pic into Bassmaster and they will post it. Mojo had his 6lb+ smallie in there a while back.

Hooksetter

That is one nice smallie!!!! I have yet to catch a smallie over 6 lbs. Hoping to change that next year! 8)

Peace.
It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.

The Bass Master Lunker Club will post that pic.  I believe you have to have a measurement of the length and the girth, as well as proof you let the fish go...alive.  They accept 6 pound plus smallies and 10 pound and up largemouths.  Nice fish.  I am really hoping to get one 6+ when I fish the DK open this spring.  I want on St.Clair in a BAD way.  I just don't have a boat that I feel comfortable with on that lake.....yet.

djkimmel

I didn't catch a 6 pounder in the DK Open on St. Clair in 2009, but my first fish of the year in that event was a 5-9! cast n blast had one well over 6 pounds. So it is possible. And why you are at it, there's a good chance your arm will get tested many times by other hard fighting smallies! I will announce a date for 2010 soon.

Firefighter Jeff

In reference to the Lunker page in Bassmasters.......  I got my first 6 pound smallie two falls ago on East Grand Traverse Bay.  When I got home I printed off the application for my picture.  I couldn't believe all they wanted.  You would have thought I was applying for a World line class record or something.  They wanted length, which I had, girth... never before measured girth, weighed on certified scales with a witness.......  Geesh  !!!  Certified scales????  It makes it harder to keep a fish alive if you have to take it to a certified scale.  Or do they just want you to have your own scale certified??  Either way, what a pain.  Anyway it was my first 6 and it's still swimming.   :)

djkimmel

I need my time for fishing, not hunting down certified scales that someone will let me use. I think girth measurements are just getting too personal ;D I'd rather use the time to catch another big bass :D

Now if it were a 12 pound smallie... well, that would be different, wouldn't it :o
