what about mono!?

I know everyone is into all of the super lines and such, but i'm still a mono-a-holic! Most of the fishing I do i use mono, except for jigs and tossin topwater into pads. Whats the best mono u've found? I used to really love spiderwire XXX, but i think they might have changed there design, it doesnt seem to hold up like it used to.

Up until a few years ago I used nothing but Trilene XT. But I had to try all the floro's, braided and hybrids. Now that I've done that I'm going back to the simple life! (Except for Fireline anad Topwater)

I dont use ANY super lines, I use Trilene XT or Gamma and I dont break off ANY fish!

I use Bass Pro Shops Excel line mostly.  As does Skip, I don't break ANY fish off either.  Of course with mono you have to check and re-tie and that is why I don't break of ANY fish.  I also use different Stren monos at times and Berkley or whatever mono is on sale.  I am not a big believer in these super lines.  I have tried them all.  I think you spend extra money on these supers for nothing.  You may not have to change line on your reel as much as I do, but that is only for convenience in my mind.  Just my 3 cents on monos versus super lines.

Gamma is copolymer, not mono.

i use 8, 12 or 15lb pline premium or fluoro-clear (copolys) or gamma 12/15.  Used to use berkley XL but the copolys are just way stronger.

I'm going to XT this year on the crank rod
I'm after the strech and being a Walleye guy at heart I have spools of 10# in the garage
Most of my other rods are all spooled in a copolymer
I like the McCoy Mean Green in 10 or 12#
Never have break offs, it's more senative (less strech) then mono and it's priced right. The 10# 1000 yd spools are 18 bucks

For me, it's P-Line CXX X-tra Strong on all of my baitcasters (except two flippin' sticks). Moss green 10lb. for pitchin', worming, and Carolina rigging, clear 10lb. for cranking, clear 15lb. for spinnerbaits, and moss green 25lb. on one flippin' stick.

Vicious makes a mono I tried primarily because I was intrigued by the box or package design. It has a grommet built in to the box so all you do is feed the line through and reel. It's one of those deals like why doesn't everybody sell their line like this. Works really well and the mono worked fine for me. I'm an old XT XL fan, but this stuff really worked well.

I use Stren mono on my reels.  I used Pline floro coated on all of my spinning rods up until the middle of last year.  I don't know why, but the last spool I bought just snapped everytime I would try to set the hook.  I used that line for 4 or 5 years and loved it, maybe it was just a bad spool.

Just trying to broaden your horizons... most lines are some type of polymer, blend or chemical bond mix nowadays anyway. Just because a line is called monofilament does not mean it only contains one type of nylon. They are almost all some type of blend. Have to keep all those college chemists in some type of honest work.

I use a line because it does what I need it to do not because it is a blend, polymer, copolymer, bond, mono, tri, bi, coated, stranded, fused or whatever.

Try it out. See how it performs. If it does the job very well, then use it regardless of what it is called or how it is marketed. Just remember all that is between you and that big fish is that line. That's why I use good, quality line I can depend on. Fishing is pretty important to me.

If you want real tough line that isn't a braid, try the CXX like I think Vince mentioned. I still use a lot of the Halo myself except for things where I need the line to not sink fast.

I'm going to try the Hydrofloat line this year for topwaters that don't require a little finesse. I might not need 80 lbs test to rip giant prop baits like I did in the Amazon, but it is just easier to get action out of a topwater when you have almost no stretch (similar to using braid for jerkbaits, another thing I plan on doing more of). I always say use the best tool for the job, not the one you like, but the best tool. You'll enjoy your fishing more that way.

I know what ur sayin dan, I was plannin on trying out some of the p-line's products this year.

But, back to mono!..............I've used my fair share of trilene xl, since its been getting harder to get spiderwire xxx. But it seems that i get some spools that really hold up and some that break for no reason (doing the same kind of fishing.) I check my knots for abbrations frequently.....dunno.

Has anyone tried out sufix?

I am with you bro, I don't use much mono, but when I do it is Stren Origianal (green)!  I used to use nothing but stren original in clear blue and green, then I found copolys and flouros, with the occasional braid.

I'm gonna try out the new Suffix, deep cranking line. It's sinking mono. What do you guy's think about using 8# for deep cranking and jerking? I wanna scrape the bottom in 20 fow on St. Clair this year. Gonna try it with the little John DD, or the new Strike King series 6xd.
