I went down to the Detroit River with my son-in-law this morning. It was a tough day. We launched at Belanger Park at 6:30 am and left at 2:00 pm.

This was my first trip to the river specifically targeting Walleyes and I only caught one, 14 ". My son-in-law caught one also, 15 3/4". We caught about a dozen smallies, one about 3 lbs. We talked to a bunch of people and it seems it was a tough day for everyone.

We were using 1/2 oz jig heads, solid brown and solid black, tipped with matching 4" finesse worms and minnows.  We caught most of our fish right in front of the RenCen. All in all It was good to get out. The best part was it didn't start to rain until we were pulling out onto Jefferson.

Peace.

Well - you did better than me in all my spring walleye Detroit River fishing put together (4 or 5 times) - it is a worse jinx for me than Lake Lansing in a tournament. I don't know why for sure. I don't think I'll make it over there this spring (darn... I'm so disappointed).

Help stop invasive spcies. Don't move fish between unconnected bodies of water. Clean, drain and dry your boat before launching on another water body.

My dad and I hit the river yesterday as well. We stayed right in front of ballenger park. We launched at 6:00am and had our 10 fish by 7:30. They were all caught with a chartruse jig head and a zoom fluke, but every fish came on the stinger hook. The stinger hook seems to be the trend this season as 95% of the walleyes I have caught have been on the stinger.
There is still about 2 more weeks of excellent fishing on the river, but unfortunatly I have to remove my green fire line and spool up the florocarbon to start chasing bass.

My son-in-law was using Fireline on both of the rigs he was using. I was using 8# mono on one and 8# floro on the other. All of my fish came on the floro. The two rigs I was using were identical except for the line.

Overall I caught two more fish than my son-in-law did.

We might head back down there on Sunday. Saturday we will be chasing bass on either the Half Moon or the Portage chain.
Peace.

I guess the lesson might be that walleye have good eyesight?
