question to the experts...

The last 3 yrs,a buddy and I who is new to bass fishin, make an annual pilgrimage up to LSC on my birthday weekend around June 3rd'ish to enjoy awesome smallie and rocky fishin out of my small,flat bottom 17' Bass Tracker and have been fishing the Mile Rds area and put in at 9 Mile.Lots of fish but mostly smaller guys.With your experience fellas,where would you reccomend different or am i in the right area?Should I pick an earlier date for bigger fish?

your coming at the right time.  still lots of spawners.  are you guys generally fishing shallower water?  there seem to be a few magic depths in the vast mile rd area.  believe it or not, 7.5 feet can make a lot of difference compared to 7 or 8 feet.  i remember a few years back, we had to be in 11.5 feet to catch anything over 3.5 lbs.  it we moved to 11 it was 2 lber after 2 lber.  moved out to 12 feet and it was the same thing.  but 11.5 was where the big ones were.  the lake is funny like that at times.

its all about location, but if it rough and you dont want to venture out to the deeper water, you can catch big ones up shallow, sometimes very shallow. 

you just have to move around until you find a good depth that seems to have the bigger fish. 

try burning a 1/2 oz spinnerbait ( I hear Nemesis Baits makes some killer spinnerbaits with colors specifically for lake st clair ) over shallow spawning flats for big bites.  Topwaters are great that time of year also.

no.  chris is moving back to MI in april and we are gonna do a lot of work of the website.  i got a color tho that is so incredible on lake st clair that simply owning one automatically entitles you to a 5lb smallmouth.

Cover lots of water.  Put the trolling motor on high and work your way out toward deeper water. I use tubes after I find a bunch of fish and the become finicky.  Sometimes all is needed is just a color change.

Sometimes color, sometimes size. 

Xtreme 5" tubes are good big fish baits.  Or, sometimes the tube trailers on a 4" tube will do about the same.  Proven colors, of Canadian Mist, and G3 work pretty good. 

Large spinner baits burned just under the surface. 

Buzz baits for top water action.  Don't get bit as much but when you do, they are pretty good size.

In Michigan when fishing for fun I sometimes drag a tube out the back while fishing faster moving baits out the front.  This gives a clue as to fish mood, and whether they prefer bottom or off the bottom techniques today.

Or, if drifting you can use a drop shot where the weight is a tube, and then ds hook is above that.  After a few bites you'll know what the fish want today also.
