Michigan is at the center of one of the largest fights in the country over hunting rights and the future of the North American Model of Conservation. Radical animal rights groups led by the Humane Society of the United States have launched two referendums designed to undermine the use of science in determining game and fish species in Michigan. GreatLakesBass.com and MUCC are standing up to them, though, and we need your help!
We’re supporting the petition drive to pass a law called the Scientific Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act. This citizen initiative will protect hunting and fishing rights, help stop Asian carp and provide free licenses to active-duty military members. It is sponsored by the Citizens for Professional Wildlife Management. In order for the Michigan Legislature to vote on the law, we need to collect over 258,000 valid signatures by May 15. Therefore, we need you to sign and circulate petitions amongst your family, friends, coworkers, fellow sportsmen and women, and even complete strangers to make this happen!
Please request a petition to sign and circulate by emailing cpwm@mucc.org with your name and mailing address. You can learn more about this initiative at www.citizenswildlife.org. If each of us collects just ten signatures, we can have a significant impact on the future of hunting, fishing and conservation in our state. User fees such as hunting and fishing licenses pay over 90% of the cost to protect our natural resources not radical animal rights groups whose only goal is take away our rights to hunt and fish even at the cost of losing almost all funding for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR). At least sign a petition yourself and return your petition right away.
Some Michigan voters will vote in November thinking they are ‘protecting’ the wolves, but they will actually vote to take away the authority of the Natural Resources Commission (NRC) to choose fish and game species managing them using sound science working with the MDNR, experts and outdoors groups. Bass anglers must keep this from happening if they want a longer Michigan bass season. The NRC needs to keep the authority they could lose in November to create a new bass season.
If we work with the other hunting and outdoor groups to ensure enough valid Michigan voter signatures on our Scientific Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act petitions the Legislature can vote our citizen initiative into law. This effectively stops the November vote from costing us our new bass season and much more! This is not something we can leave for someone else to do. If you’re a registered Michigan voter and care about the outdoors you must sign the petition. You can only sign the petition once. You can get others to sign the petition if you’re eligible to be a registered Michigan voter, you’re at least 18 years old, have lived in Michigan for at least 30 days, and are a United States Citizens.
Please join GreatLakesBass.com and Citizens for Professional Wildlife Management in saving our rights to hunt and fish, and saving our bass season. Do it now! Time is almost up!
