Volunteers from area sportsmen’s clubs will collect the food for the Annual Tony Gates/Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger Food Drive and donate it to God’s Kitchen and other West Michigan distribution centers for people in need.

The annual drive, spear-headed by the popular WLAV-FM morning show host, brings in several tons of food each year from thousands of donors.

Beginning at 6 a.m., Gates will broadcast all day until 7 p.m. from an RV at 303 Monroe Street NW in front of DeVos Place in downtown Grand Rapids. Some donors, in a hurry to get to work, drop off sacks of food but don’t have time to accept the free pass to the show.

“This is one of Michigan’s largest single-day food drives and it annually provides nutritious and needed food for those less fortunate,” said Ben Neilsen, event manager for ShowSpan, Inc., which produces the state’s longest-running sport show, which began in 1946. “So many sportsmen and women contribute each year that we literally give away the gate proceeds that night. We’re happy to do it and delighted that Tony Gates will lead the charge again this year.”

The Ultimate Sport Show runs through Sunday, March 23. For more information, go to: www.ultimatesportshow.com
