GRAND RAPIDS The Kent County Sheriff Department will hold a free ORV Safety Certification class on Saturday, March 19, at the Ultimate Sport Show. The 66th annual event, Michigan’s largest sport show, is at DeVos Place, 303 Monroe NW in downtown Grand Rapids.
The class is scheduled from Noon to 5:00 p.m. Pre-Registration is not required. Students who check in at the show entrance will be escorted to the classroom on the third floor. When the class ends, they will be offered free admission to the sport show, which runs until nine o’clock that evening.
State law requires that all drivers under 16 years of age must pass the class and carry with them the certificate to operate motorcycle dirt bikes, quad-runners and other off-road vehicles (ORVs) on public or private property. Fines, to which parents and operators may be subjected, are $500 and/or 90 days in jail.
According to Don Hamilton, Kent County Sheriff Deputy, students will learn the laws and safety rules during the five-hour class. “We’ve had several thousand students successfully pass the class over the past few years,” he said.
